The Atlanta Reign’s Overwatch League debut was a thing only rumored to exist within the shadowy depths of Overwatch subreddits. Whispers of comps only echoed from the deep recesses of digital chasms. Places where memes of a bearded Swedish dwarf are plastered to the walls like disjointed scales of an ancient serpent. A faint light reveals the remnants of aged text across the bottom of the memes. Reaching up to wipe the sediment from its parasitic grasp a phrase becomes clear. In faded white letters the fabled mantra reads, “Let’s go, dude”.
Seriously though, who would have ever dreamed in a million years that Dafran would come out on the first map of his career rocking Torbjorn? Tell the truth, I sure didn’t expect it. The moment he did though, whether you identify as a fan of The Reign or even Dafran, we all lost our minds. The already infamous and beloved (at least in Atlanta) streamer and OWL Rookie became a legend.
Atlanta would go on to steam roll through the Florida Mayhem, who still seems to be trying to exorcise the same demons from last season. Atlanta would become the first team to win a match 4-0 and something very evident became clear: The Reign has swagger. Not like an 8th grader going to his first dance wearing his dad’s cologne swagger, I’m talking Heath Ledger as The Joker swagger. They didn’t just put it on, they embodied it. They oozed it! This kind of confidence is essential and carrying that momentum into the match against The Philly Fusion is exactly what this team needs. To what heights this fiery fowl will ascend is hard to say, but one thing is for sure, it is rising! "Let’s go, dudes!" says I!
